What I remember most about that excellent English class, however, was "the box". Instead of doing reports on books we'd read, we got to pick a project from the teacher's box of ideas: anything from writing short plays about our books, to doing artwork, to writing poems and songs. It was a magical approach to studying books (and infinitely more fun than book reports). I remember writing lyrics (sung to the tune of Yankee Doodle) for a song about Caddie Woodlawn. Inspired, don't you think? *grin* In high school and college, I won English departmental awards for creative writing. I also tied for first place in a statewide collegiate literary competition by writing a villanelle called "She Wakes at Dawn." After college I took a job in communications, something that would allow me to write, but also earn a living. Over the years, I've written press releases and newsletters, run my own online business, even created web sites. Samples of some of my "business" work can be found here and here. These are from my days doing freelance work for the Levin School of Law at the University of Florida. Go Gators! (I had to say that: hubby was born and raised in Gainesville. He's a *huge* Gator fan!) It wasn't until very recently, however, that I found myself in the right time, place, and frame of mind to start writing creatively once more. So, here I am. Doing what I've loved all along, and enjoying every minute of it. |
